Death Memo He is last known to be alive when he sold property in Wayne Twp., Dauphin Co., Pa. in 1890. His wife is listed as a widow in the 1900 census and has having been married 52 years. They were married on 8 August 1839, which would put his date of death in late 1891 or early 1892. Death records were recorded in Dauphin Co. beginning in 1893.

Burial Memo buried, Simon HESS died in 1891 or 1892, shortly after selling property in Wayne Twp., Dauphin Co., and was presumably buried shortly after. His widow appears to have relocated to Harrisburg before the fourth quarter of 1895, and first appears in the Harrisburg City Directory in 1896. Using her husband's name, she purchases two lots in East Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Pa., where records show that Simon Hess is buried. She appears to have had her husband disinterred from his previous burial place and buried in East Harrisburg Cemetery in 1896.

Notes for Sarah WIRTH (WERT)
Her death certificate recorded in Dauphin County states in legible
handwriting that her birthplace is "Lingslotter." The absence of a
county name probably indicates it is Dauphin County. This place has
not been identified, but it is probably Linglestown, Lower Paxton
Twp., Dauphin Co., Pa. The birthplace on the death return may have
been partially illegible and the recorder transferred the birthplace
to the register as it appeared in the death return. Simon and Sarah
HESS lived in Lower Paxton from 1840 to 1843. Her death certificate
recorded in the City of Harrisburg gives her birthdate as, 13 June
1819, but gives no additional information about her birth, and no
information about her parents.

She was born and baptized in East Hanover Twp., Lebanon Co., Pa.
according to the church records of Bindnagle Lutheran Church. Her
father, Jacob WERT, appears with his family in Hanover Twp., Lebanon
Co., Pa., in 1820, when Sarah would have been about a year old, and
in Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., Pa. in 1830 and 1840. Her
father appears in the tax lists in Lower Paxton in 1830, so it
appears that her parents moved the family from Hanover to Lower
Paxton at this time, and that she was brought up from the age of
eleven onwards in Linglestown, Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., Pa.

Her Dauphin County death certificate indicates she was born in
Linglestown, Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., Pa., but this is
probably not correct since her father does not appear in tax lists in
Lower Paxton until 1830. Linglestown is a census-designated place in
Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA.

The 1900 census says she had 13 children, 7 still living (a total of
6 boys and 6 girls, and a 13th child not identified, who probably
died young in between the cenuses).
Her 1905 obituaries says she was survived by four daughters. Sarah
survived 9 of her 13 children, including all 6 of her sons.

Her maiden name is listed as Mary WERTZ on the death certificate of
her daughter Eliza MILLER nee HESS. Her full name may be Mary Sarah
WERT/WIRTH/WERTZ (or Sarah Mary).
