His Request for Marriage License lists Ontario, Canada as his
birthplace, and 23 September 1870 as his birthdate.

He is reported to have lived in Ontario, Canada before moving to
America.

He went by the name, Chauncey. It is not known whether Chauncey or
Charles is his first name. His name appears frequently as Charles C.
Oaks or Oakes, and occasionally as Chauncey C. Oaks or Oakes. His
marriage certificate in Philadelphia reads, Charles C. Oaks.

According to Joan Mary HAHN, she has in her possession a letter from
Chauncey to Mary Jane. In the letter he is trying to explain to her
why he is not able to come to Philadelphia for the weekend but must
stay in New York. We think he may be with another woman, possibly
Josephine. There is a period of several years where he appears in
both the Philadelphia and Brooklyn City Directories.
