His mother apparently was married or had a child by a Charles LOOMIS
prior to her marriage to his step-father, Charles Smith MILLER. The
1900 census shows Eliza HESS married to Charles Smith MILLER for 33
years (abt. 1867/8), and Samuel LOOMIS born, May 1867. The 1880
census shows a Samuel HESS (peresumably Samuel LOOMIS) living with
his mother and step-father, and he is listed as 14 years old (b. abt.
1865/6). His age is not entirely legible in his applixation for
marriage license, it appears closest to 22 years.
