Notes for Stanley HAHN | ||||||||||||||||
According to Matilda May Hahn: He is reported to have been an automobile parts salesman for Penn Jersey and another company. He inherited $16,000.00 at the death of a first or second cousin in 1943, and quit his job. For three or four years he would take the train to New York to have a drink or two and return. He was a heavy drinker and shouted a lot, but was otherwise never abusive. He used to bootleg his own whiskey. His son-in-law, Alfred Guido said of him emphatically, "he was an intelligent man." 1900 United States Federal Census Record (on 1 June, enumerated 14 & 15 June): In 1900, at age of 3, he was the youngest of six surviving children (his brother Arthur had died), and cared for by his parents in a home at 2329 Albion St., Philadelphia. He sold his house in 1945 shortly after his wife committed suicide, and his children went to live with others. Matilda married at age 16, Richard went to live with Mrs. KINNEY, and Joan went to live with her grandmother, Mary Jane. Joan says she remembers having very little contact with her father from that point on. She says her parents fought constantly, would embarrass her in public, that her mother would leave the family for periods of time, and that she has no happy memories from that time. She remembers an incident when her father cut up her mother's clothes with a razor blade. She also said that her father used to call Richard a glutton. She also said her father was an alcoholic, and woke up one moring shaking so badly that he had Richard go to a bar around the corner to buy liquor for him (and that the bar probably permitted him to make the purchase because their father brought them so much business). She said her father inherited $17,000 or $18,000 from a cousin who committed suicide and that her father drank it all away after two years at the bar around the corner. Her father was rushed to the hospital following a heart attack, and died after having a second heart attack at the hospital. They had a dog named, "lucky" and a cat named, "stranger". He stood about 5 feet 4 inches tall. | ||||||||||||||||
