Marriage Record of Johannes Hahn and Johannetta Liebmann

Eppelsheim Register of Marriages, 1812

By Steven Matthew Hahn, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The French Republic was established in 1792 and from its inception civil registrations were made compulsory in the Town Halls throughout the Republic. In 1792 the village of Eppelsheim was part of the Archbishopric of Mainz, an ecclesiastical principality of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1797, the area of the Holy Roman Empire lying west of the Rhine River was annexed to France, and the registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in Eppelsheim the following year. There are no synagogue records for the Jews in Eppelsheim; therefore there are no vital records for the Jews in Eppelsheim prior to 1798.

In 1806, after the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt was formed east of the Rhine River near Eppelsheim. After the defeat of Napoléon I in 1814 the area around Mainz west of the Rhine River, which included Eppelsheim, was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt and formed the province of Rhinehessen. Civil registration continued in Eppelsheim. Records were recorded in German from 1798 to mid 1804, in French from mid 1804 to 1814, and in German from 1815 to the present.

The transcription of the text of the marriage record of Johannes Hahn and Johannetta Liebmann as recorded in the Eppelsheim Register of Marriages in 1812 is shown first in French followed by its translation in English. The handwritten portions of the record are shown in italics. The age of Johannes Hahn is mistakenly given as twenty-seven years. The correct age should be thirty-four years (or just shy of it) based on his birth-year of 1778. His brother, Emanuel was married three weeks earlier in Eppelsheim at the age of twenty-seven years and confusion with his brother’s age may be the cause of the mistake.
