Notes for John WORDSWORTH IV | ||||||||||||||
Yeoman. According to Peter Howard Cadogan: In his will, John stated that he is from Rodwood in the parish of Penistone. Bedford stated that this John Wordsworth was born in 1605 and was of Rodwood, Lower Thurlstone in the parish of Rodwood. I suspect that this was probably Royd Moor. I obtained the baptism date of 3rd June 1604 from the film of Penistone Bishop's Transcripts that is held at Barnsley library, based on my belief that his father was also called John (ie not Christopher, which was another possibility). The key to John's origins lie with the reference in his will to his late brother Edward, who bequeathed 20 pounds to John's son Josias in his 1638 will, a bequest that was referred to in John's own will. In 1648 Adam Eyre wrote in his Yorkshire Diaries that he tried to borrow £40 from John Wordsworth of Rodwood, but John would not lend it to him. He was more successful with William Wordsworth of Softley. Bedford claimed that John's father was Thomas Wordsworth of Thurlstone. But this Thomas was born in 1523 so would have been 82 if John was born around 1605. It is quite possible that this Thomas was actually "Thomas of Softley, clothier", and although this Thomas did indeed have a son called John, this John only seems to have had one son (called William) and 4 daughters. So it does not seem possible that John of Rodwood and John of Softley (William's father) were one and the same. http://w ww.archive.org/stream/abstractsofproba06chur/abstractsofproba06chur_dj vu.txt Anno 1652 Will [ 19s Bowyer] pr.
