Notes for William DEWS
1807 - Tailor
1841 - Age 56 [b. 1784/5], b. Yorkshire, Tailor [[ birthplace is
often in error in 1841 census, when actual birth occurred outside of
county ]]
1845 - Tailor
1851 - Age 67 [b. 1785/6], b. Lincolnshire, Taylor

Joseph DEWS and Elizabeth CRAVEN married at All Saints Parish Church,
Dewsbury on 3 Nov 1765, and had children baptized at the parish
church including a son, William Craven DEWS, baptized July 1781,
while his father was a resident of Ossett.

William DEWS and Elizabeth (Betty) BAINES had a son, William Craven
DEWS, baptized, 14 Sep 1823, at St. Peter and St. Leonard's Church,
Horbury. It is possible that William DEWS (b. abt. 1784,
Lincolnshire) is to be identified with William Craven DEWS (b. abt.
1781, Ossett), if the birthplace for William DEWS is inaccurate in
the 1851 census, and his age is inaccurate to about three years in
both the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

The following children of William DEWS and Elizabeth (Betty) BAINES,
were baptized at St. Peter and St. Leonard's Church, Horbury.
28 Aug 1808 - William Henry Dews
15 Apr 1810 - Mary Ann Dews
25 Dec 1811 - Henry Dews
19 Dec 1813 - Susan Dews
17 Sep 1815 - Edwin Dews
25 May 1817 - Josiah Dews
04 Jun 1820 - Susannah Dews
14 Sep 1823 - William Craven Dews

Hi Steve

It was the naming of their second son named William that makes me
think that the father is actually William Craven Dews, but I can
understand your doubt.
The first son, William Henry Dews, I think is probably the "Henry
Dews, son of Wm Dews, Taylor and Elizabeth, his wife" buried 19 Oct
1810 St Peter & St Leonard, Horbury.
Regarding the census and birth place, I think the 1841 is the more
reliable. William Dews is the head of the house and presumably
supplied the information. In 1851 William Craven Dews is a lodger
with James Taylor who is head of the house.
I think James Taylor has supplied the wrong information or the
enumerator has had a guess. Note there is no marital status recorded
for the other lodger George Eley.
William Craven Dews, tailor & widower of Dennington, married Rebecca
Goodair in 1847 at Sandal Magna. His father was Joseph Dews.
The age of William on both census is at odds with the baptism year,
but what are the odds of there being two William Craven Dews, with
father named Joseph?
There is a William Dewes who died in the Poor House, Wakefield, aged
70 years, buried 17 Nov 1851 at Holy Trinity, Wakefield. Maybe the
Vicar knew his true age. I don't expect he left a Will if he died in
the poorhouse.

Rebecca (nee Earnshaw) was the relict of Pickard Goodair, butcher.
They were married in 1819 in Woolley, WRY.There was a Pickard Goodair
who died in Cheshire in 1846. Pickard's first wife Martha Nash died
in 1815

There is an Elizabeth Dews of Horbury, died aged 59 and buried 13 Feb
1842, who I think could be the wife of William Craven Dews.
Unfortunately her husband was not named on the register.

kind regards
Stan
